Provisional residence permit: for a long stay in the Netherlands
An authorization for temporary stay (MVV) is an entry visa for long-term residence in the Netherlands. It is a visum (category D), valid for multiple entries in the Netherlands, but also valid for others Schengen countries. You can also use an MVV visa residence permit apply for the Netherlands.
The MVV is applied for at the Dutch embassy in the country of residence, which asks the IND for advice. If the IND gives a positive advice, the visa will generally be issued. The procedure takes approximately 3 months.
The main purposes of residence for which an MVV is applied for are
- Working in the Netherlands (often a work permit is also required for this).
- Studying in the Netherlands.
- Living in the Netherlands with a Dutch partner (“family formation” or “family reunification”).
After arriving in the Netherlands, the immigrant must register with the municipality in the Municipal Administration (GBA) within three working days, or have made an appointment for this. At that time, a residence permit is also applied for (VVR, residence permit, regular).
Apply for a provisional residence permit (mvv).
Are you from outside the European Union (EU) and do you want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days? Then in most cases you have one residence permit necessary. Sometimes you must first apply for an authorization for temporary stay (mvv). This is a special entry visa. You can apply for the mvv and the subsequent residence permit with the combined procedure for Entry and Residence (TEV). Also think of one medical travel insurance, you must be able to prove that you are insured for medical costs.
Nationality is decisive
Your nationality determines whether you need to apply for an mvv. Even if you do not live in your country of origin or if you have a residence permit in another country.
Do you have the nationality of one of the countries listed below? Then you do not need an mvv and you can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands without an mvv.

- Monaco
- New Zealand
- Vatican
- USA
- South Korea
Are you a EU/EEA national or Swiss? Then you do not need to apply for an mvv or residence permit. Are you family member of an EU/EEA or Swiss national? Then you are not required to have an mvv and you can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands without an mvv.

Procedure for applying for a provisional residence permit
A sponsor in the Netherlands usually applies for the mvv. A sponsor is the person with whom you want to live in the Netherlands. Or the organization that arranges your stay in the Netherlands. For example, a school or employer. The sponsor applies for the mvv at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
Don't have a reference? Then you can apply for the mvv yourself at the Dutch embassy. You do this in your country of origin or in another country from which you have a residence permit.
