What does the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) do?
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security that is responsible for the implementation of immigration policy. This means that the IND assesses all applications from foreign nationals who want to stay in the Netherlands or who want to become Dutch citizens.
Anyone who wants to come to the Netherlands for a longer period of time, ie longer than three months, will have to deal with the IND. You can apply for a residence permit (VVR), but also a visa or an Authorization for Provisional Residence (MVV). If you have stayed in the Netherlands for a longer period of time, you can apply for naturalisation.
Residents of countries requiring a visa who want to come to the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days must apply for a visa Schengen visa apply for a stay in the Netherlands. The IND (or, as an outpost, the embassy/consulate) may decide on a visa application for the Schengen area. The starting point of the IND is that the service wants to prevent illegal immigration. The motivation for a rejection is subject to the Visa Code of the EU, which can be found on the website of the European Union.
