What is a multiple entry visa C for the Netherlands?
A visa for the Netherlands is officially called 'Visa Short Stay' and is a type C (also called Schengen visa). This visa will be stuck in the passport of the visa applicant when it is granted. A multiple-entry visa (MEV) gives the traveler the opportunity to visit the Netherlands for an unlimited number of times (as long as the visa is valid and subject to the 90/180 day rule).
There are two types of short stay visa:
- Create a single entry visa with a validity of up to 90 days. This allows you to stay in the Netherlands/Schengen area for a maximum of 1 days once.
- Create a multiple entry visa (MEV) with a validity period of 1 to a maximum of 5 years. This permit allows a maximum stay of 90 days per 180 days in the Netherlands/Schengen area. This does not have to be consecutive. You can also distribute this. But the visa holder may never stay in the Netherlands/Schengen area for more than 90 days out of 180 days.
Is a multiple-entry visa a 5-year visa?
No. A multiple entry visa is also incorrectly referred to as a 5-year visa. This is incorrect because a multiple-entry visa is also issued for 1 or more years. In addition, it is short stay visa never valid longer than the period of validity of the passport of the stranger. When you are going to apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa, it is also advisable to first check the validity period of your passport. For example, if your passport is only valid for 2 years, you will also receive a multiple-entry visa with a maximum validity of 2 years. It might be wise to renew your passport first.
What are the advantages of a multiple entry visa?

Can I change a single entry visa to a multiple entry?
If you have traveled to the Netherlands with a single-entry visa, you cannot simply change it to a single-entry visa multiple entry visa. This is only possible in situations of force majeure, humanitarian reasons, serious professional reasons or personal circumstances that have changed after you traveled to the Netherlands. Before submitting the request, you must make an appointment with a IND desk.
Can anyone have one multiple entry apply for a visa for the Netherlands?
Usually, a multiple-entry visa is not issued if you are traveling to the Netherlands for the first time, but there are exceptions, for example for business travelers. But if you have already been to the Netherlands once and returned without any problems, so you have complied with all visa rules, you can apply for a multiple-entry visa for your next trip.
As of February 2, 2020, a multiple entry visa (MEV) must be issued to bona fide frequent travelers as standard. Member States may of course be more generous in issuing MEVs. In individual cases, they may decide not to issue an MEV.
- An MEV is valid for 1 year provided that the applicant has completed three in the previous two years
visas and used them lawfully. - An MEV is valid for 2 years, provided the applicant has completed the previous two
year has received an MEV issued earlier with a validity of one year and
lawfully used. - An MEV is valid for 5 years, provided the applicant has been in the previous three years
has received an MEV issued earlier with a validity of two years and
lawfully used.
What should you think about if you have a multiple-entry do you have a visa for the Netherlands?
A multiple-entry visa does not release you from all obligations. For example, a form for guarantee and/or accommodation must still be completed for the foreign guest. There must be one for every trip to the Netherlands travel medical insurance and the visa holder must have all relevant documents with him when entering the Netherlands.
