The civic integration examination is a compulsory test for people who want to live and work in the Netherlands and who do not have Dutch nationality. The exam consists of two parts: a written part and an oral part. During the written part, the participants must demonstrate knowledge about the Dutch language, society and society. Below are the steps you can follow for the Basic Civic Integration Exam abroad:
1. Check if you have to take the exam
You do not have to take the civic integration examination abroad if you belong to the exceptions.
2. Prepare for the exam

3. Register with DUO
To be able to take the basic civic integration exam, you must: register with the Education Executive Agency (DUO).
4. Pay at DUO
The exam consists of the parts:
- Speaking (speaking skills)
- Reading (reading skills)
- Knowledge of Dutch society (KNS)
The exam costs a total of € 150. You pay the costs to DUO.
5. Make an appointment for the exam
You take the exam at a Dutch representation. This can be an embassy, consulate or an external service provider. Under 'Make an appointment' you can read how to make an appointment and what you need to bring to the appointment.
6. When will you hear the result?
You will receive an email from DUO within 8 weeks informing you whether you have passed the exam.
7. Apply for a provisional residence permit (mvv).
