Emergency visa for the Netherlands
If you want to visit family due to the death or terminal illness of a person residing in the Netherlands, an urgent visa can be applied for. An urgent visa is usually not a Schengen visa and only gives access to the Netherlands.
An urgent visa can only be applied for for a 1st or 2nd degree relative of the person in the Netherlands who is terminally ill or deceased:
- Parents, children, brothers and sisters.
- Grandparents
- Brothers-in-law/sisters-in-law, sons-in-law/daughters-in-law and fathers-in-law/mothers-in-law
- Stepparents and stepchildren, stepbrothers/stepsisters
A family member in the Netherlands must contact the IND by telephone to apply for the urgent visa. After that, the family member abroad must go to a Dutch representation (embassy consulate) to submit the visa application.
You must meet the following conditions:
- You have a valid travel document (e.g. passport),
- You are not a threat to public order.
- You have no alert within the Schengen area
- You can demonstrate that you will return to the country of origin.
- You or a third person have sufficient means of existence (money) for the duration of your stay in the Netherlands.
