If someone wants to travel from Thailand to the Netherlands for a short stay (maximum 90 days), for example for a holiday or partner visit, then a Schengen visa required. In order to apply for a Schengen visa, you must also take out travel medical insurance. This can be done quickly and cheaply here.
If you are coming from Thailand to the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days for a holiday, business trip or family visit, follow these steps to apply for a Schengen visa in Thailand:
- First check whether you need a visa and where you can apply for it. If you don't need a visa, see what other documents you need for your trip to the Netherlands.
- Collect the correct documents you need to apply for a Schengen visa. The documents depend on the purpose of your trip. VFS Global has a checklist with the necessary documents for your purpose of travel.
- Make an appointment with VFS Global in Bangkok to apply for the visa. Do this at least 45 calendar days before your trip. Go to the appointment yourself, unless you have already applied for a Schengen visa in the past 5 years and meet certain conditions.
- During your appointment you will hand in the necessary documents, give fingerprints (if you are 12 years or older), answer questions about your trip, pay the visa fee and discuss how to receive your passport with visa. You will be given a reference number to track your application.
- Pick up your passport or have it sent to you after you have received an email that your application is ready. Check that the information on your visa is correct. If something is not right, please contact the Dutch embassy in Bangkok.
- Prepare your trip and make sure you have the Schengen visa and the necessary documents with you. On departure and arrival you show the visa and the border control may ask for other documents.
Do you have questions about making an appointment at VFS Global or the status of your application? Please contact VFS Global in Thailand. For other questions, please contact Netherlands Worldwide.
Schengen visa for the Netherlands
The Schengen area is a cooperation of 26 European member states that have a common border and visa policy. Member States are bound by the same visa rules. This allows travelers to move within the entire Schengen area without border controls or separate visa requirements. Guests from Thailand who want to visit the Netherlands must apply for a visa in advance. Officially this is called a short-stay visa (VKV), or visa 'type C', but it is also popularly referred to as a 'tourist visa' or 'Schengen visa'.
A Schengen visa is a joint visa for all Schengen states (the Netherlands is part of the Schengen area) and gives access to the 27 Schengen Member States in Europe. You can travel through a large part of Europe with a Schengen visa without having to apply for a separate visa for each country.
When can I apply for a Schengen visa?
A visa application for the Netherlands can be submitted at the earliest 6 months and at the latest 15 calendar days before the start of the intended travel date. Our advice is to submit an application well in advance of the intended departure date.
What is the validity period of a visa for travelers from Thailand?
The stay in the Schengen area is limited to a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days for visa-requiring and non-visa-requiring persons from outside the EU. This means that Thai who has been in the Schengen area for 90 days may only return to the Netherlands after he has been outside the Schengen area for 90 days.
A Schengen visa is in principle valid for 6 months from the date of issue. The stay in the Schengen area must take place within these 6 months. The return journey may therefore not take place after the expiry date.
Requirements for a Schengen visa for Thai
The main requirements to obtain a Schengen visa for the Netherlands are:
- Possession of a valid travel document (passport). The travel document must be valid for 3 months longer than the end of the visa period and may not be older than 10 years.
- Two recent passport size photographs must be submitted that meet the requirement.
- A completed and signed application form for a Schengen visa.
- Can afford the trip financially: has sufficient means of support. This means that he or she must be able to spend 55 euros per day. If the guest from Thailand does not have sufficient means, a guarantor (the inviting party) must stand surety. The income of this person, the sponsor, is then looked at.
- The traveler from Thailand must be able to prove where he/she is staying, such as a hotel reservation or proof of residence (accommodation) with a private individual. When a Thai is staying with the inviting party, an original form 'proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation' must be submitted. This form must be legalized at the municipality.
- The Thai guest must be able to prove that he or she has taken out medical travel insurance. This must be valid throughout the Schengen area and cover at least EUR 30.000 for medical expenses and repatriation.
- When applying for a Schengen visa, an option or reservation on a flight ticket must also be submitted.
- The Thai guest must make it plausible that he/she will return to Thailand in time. This involves a combination of evidence. For example, previous visas for (Western) countries, a job, possession of real estate and other things that demonstrate a strong social or economic bond with Thailand, such as care for minor children.
- The applicant must pay the equivalent of € 80 in Thai baht for the visa fee.
- The visa applicant must not be reported to the European authorities and must not pose a threat to public order or state security.
Apply for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands
You must have one Schengen visa always request in person if you have not yet provided biometric data. You then have your fingerprints taken. You do this when you submit your application. These remain valid for 59 months. For some applicants, such as children under the age of 12, this is not necessary. Have you provided biometrics (fingerprints and photo) within the last 59 months prior to your current application? Then you can choose to have your application submitted by someone else. You do not have to appear in person.
You apply for a visa at the Dutch representation in Thailand. You often have to submit the visa application to an external agency: the external service provider (EDV). The Dutch government uses this Vfs global. This office will receive the application and send it to the Dutch representation for processing. In this case, in addition to the costs for the visa application, you also pay an additional amount to the external service provider.

Schengen visa and travel insurance
If you bring family, friends or a partner from Thailand, then medical travel insurance must be taken out for that person that meets the Schengen conditions. Proof of this – the policy – must be shown at the embassy during the visa application. This insurance serves to cover any expenses in the event of repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care or emergency treatment in a hospital. The insurance must be valid for all Schengen member states and must be valid for the entire duration of the stay. The minimum cover must be € 30.000.
This medical travel insurance also serves to protect the sponsor, because this person is financially responsible. The medical insurance can therefore be taken out by an interested party in the Netherlands. The interested party can be a sponsor (guarantor/accommodation provider), but also a friend, family or partner of the Thai guest. In that case, the interested party is also the policyholder (premium payer) and the visa applicant (Thai national) is the insured.
