Is someone from Indonesia coming to the Netherlands for a family visit, for example? Then a Schengen visa must first be applied for. A Schengen visa allows a person from Indonesia to stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days. An important condition for obtaining a Schengen visa is taking out medical travel insurance that meets the visa requirements for Schengen.
If the main purpose of your stay is the Netherlands, you can apply for a Schengen visa at the Dutch embassy in Jakarta. For this you first make an appointment via Vfs global, which is an external service provider appointed by the embassy to take and check the visa application and other documents.
Six steps to apply for a visa for the Netherlands
If you want to travel from Indonesia to the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days, for example for a holiday, business trip or family visit, you must apply for a Schengen visa in Indonesia. You can also do this for Belgium or Luxembourg at the application location of the Netherlands in Jakarta.
Step 1: First check whether you need a visa for the Netherlands and where you can apply for a visa. If you don't need a visa, see what other documents you need for your trip. For a Schengen visa you can go to Indonesia application center of VFS Global in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya.
Step 2: Collect the right documents, depending on the purpose of your trip. You will find a checklist of the documents you need on the VFS Global website. The Netherlands only recognizes Indonesian passports with your signature or a signature via a stamp of approval. If you are traveling to or with a family member who is an EU, EEA or Swiss national, you may be able to get a free facilitating Schengen visa.
Step 3: Make an appointment with VFS Global if you have all the documents required for applying for a Schengen visa. You can apply for the visa 6 months before your trip, but at least 45 calendar days before your trip. If you are a seafarer, you can apply for the visa 9 months in advance.
Step 4: Go to your appointment at VFS Global and bring all documents. During your appointment you hand in the documents, give your fingerprints (if you are 12 years or older), answer questions about your trip, pay the costs for the visa and discuss whether you will pick up your passport with visa or have it shipped to your address. You will be given a reference number to track your application.
Step 5: Pick up your passport or have it sent to you. You will receive an email when your application is ready. If your application is approved, the visa is stuck in your passport. Check that the information on your visa is correct. If the information is incorrect or you cannot use the visa for the trip you want to make, please contact the Dutch embassy in Jakarta.
Step 6: Prepare your trip. You travel with the Schengen visa in your passport to the Netherlands or another Schengen country. Show the visa on departure and on arrival. The border control also asks you for other documents, such as your medical travel insurance. You can read what you need in the checklist for traveling to the Netherlands.

Schengen visa Netherlands: main requirements
The most important requirements for applying for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands are:
- The person from Indonesia must be in possession of a valid travel document (passport). The travel document must be valid for 3 months longer than the end of the visa period and may not be older than 10 years.
- Can afford the trip financially: has sufficient means of support. For the Netherlands, the requirement is 55 euros per day per traveler. If the traveler does not have sufficient means, a guarantor (the inviting party) must stand surety. The income of this person, the sponsor, is then looked at.
- Documents related to the place of residence such as a hotel reservation or proof of residence (accommodation) with a private individual or the guarantor. For the Netherlands, an original form 'proof of guarantee and/or private accommodation' must be completed for this purpose. This form must be legalized at the municipality.
- Medical travel insurance for the entire Schengen area with a minimum cover of 30.000 euros.
- An option or reservation on an airline ticket. Do not book (pay) the ticket until the visa has been granted!
- Makes it plausible that he/she will return to Indonesia (or the country of origin) in time. It is a combination of evidence. For example, previous visas for (Western) countries, a job, possession of real estate and other matters that demonstrate a strong social or economic bond with the country of origin, such as care for minor children.
- Has not been reported to the European authorities and does not pose a threat to public order or national security.
- A completed and signed application form for a Schengen visa.
- Two recent passport size photos that meet the requirement.

Medical travel insurance and guarantee
If you guarantee a foreign guest or partner who wants to visit the Netherlands, it is advisable to take out medical travel insurance yourself. Not only is this a requirement for your guest's visa application, but it also provides financial protection for you. As a guarantor, you are financially responsible for any medical costs that your guest incurs during their stay in the Netherlands, and these costs can be significant.
By taking out the insurance yourself and sending the policy to the visa applicant by email, you have control over the process. It is advisable to ensure that you are the policyholder (the person paying the premium) and that your guest is the insured person. A major advantage of this is that any damage payments are transferred to you instead of to your guest's bank account.
A good option for this situation is the Schengen insurance that we offer. This is an excellent travel medical insurance policy specifically designed for Schengen visa applications. It provides the necessary coverage and meets the requirements for obtaining a Schengen visa. By taking out this insurance, you ensure that you meet the visa requirements and offer both yourself and your guest financial protection during their stay in the Netherlands.
