From November 2023, obtaining a stamp in the passport possibly past tense for travelers who use it Schengen area .
The EU will then namely automate the Entry/Exit System (EES) launch, which digitizes the registration of non-EU visitors and makes stamping passports superfluous. According to the European Commission, the current system is inefficient and unreliable.
The EES is an automated technological system that manages the arrival and departure of travelers from third countries with a Schengen visa for short stay or visa-free travelers. When someone crosses an EU external border, the system will record their name, travel document, biometrics (face images and fingerprints) and entry and exit details. The system will also contain information about a possible denial of entry. By automating border control, the EU hopes to improve security and make traveling to the Schengen area more efficient.
However, travelers who can currently visit the Schengen area without a visa must obtain travel authorization through the Schengen area before then European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). This online system will be launched in phases alongside EES.
Until then, it will still be customary to get stamps in the passport as proof that visitors have their visa-free period of 90 days within a period of 180 days.
