Note: This information is no longer current. Since September 17, 2022, there are no longer any corona rules for travelers to the Netherlands. You can travel to the Netherlands without a long-distance relationship statement, proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or negative test result. If you are subject to a visa requirement, you must of course first apply for a Schengen visa.
For travelers from countries outside the EU, the European entry ban applies during the Corona pandemic. This means that they are not allowed to enter the European Union/Schengen area and therefore the Netherlands.
There are exceptions to the EU entry ban. This applies to travelers from safe countries and certain groups such as business travelers, students, highly skilled migrants, professionals from the cultural and creative sector and long-distance lovers. Fully vaccinated people are also allowed to enter the EU, unless they come from a country that has been designated as a very high-risk area due to the presence of a worrying variant.
Entry ban exception for safe countries (low COVID-19 risk)
If you come from a country outside the European Union/Schengen area with a low COVID-19 risk, a safe country, then you may travel to the Netherlands. There is no EU entry ban for this.

Exception from entry ban for fully vaccinated travelers
If you are a resident of a country that is not on the list of safe countries, but you are fully vaccinated, you can be exempted from the EU entry ban. You may enter the Netherlands if you travel with a vaccination certificate can demonstrate that you have been fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) or World Health Organization (WHO).
Exception entry ban for long-distance loved ones
If you have a long-distance relationship with someone from a country to which the EU entry ban due to corona applies, your partner may travel to the Netherlands under certain conditions. Your partner may stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days. Your partner's minor children up to the age of 18 may also travel with you.
Exception from entry ban for study, knowledge and research
- You are a student coming to the Netherlands for a short stay (less than 3 months). You also have proof of registration from an educational institution that is on the list of recognized sponsors.
- You are a highly skilled migrant coming to the Netherlands for a short stay (less than 3 months). You also have proof of the work to be performed or work permit.
- You are a researcher or scientist in accordance with the action framework for researchers or scientists.
Exception from entry ban for certain professions and activities
- You have a vital function or need: healthcare staff, doctor or nurse.
- You are a frontier worker.
- You are a seasonal worker.
- You work in the transport sector:
- freight transport
- container ships
- bulk carriers (e.g. ore or coal)
- tankers (fuels and chemicals)
- fishing
- You work in the energy sector:
- oil and gas platforms
- wind farms
- offshore companies that provide services to the energy sector.
- You are a professional who performs urgent technical work for the vital sector, which requires specialist knowledge and physical presence.
- You are part of a flight crew.
- You are a seafarer and in possession of a seaman's book. This does not concern seafarers on commercial yachts and pleasure craft.
- You are a diplomat.
- You are in possession of a service passport and you have to travel to perform your job.
- You are a soldier and have to travel to perform your job.
- You work for an international or humanitarian organization.
- You are a journalist according to it framework for journalists.
- You are a top athlete according to it action framework for top athletes.
- You are a researcher or scientist according to it action framework for researchers or scientists.
- You are a business traveler according to the framework of action Exception from entry ban for business travelers.
- You are a professional in the cultural and creative sector according to the exception entry ban culture, science, journalism.
Exception from the entry ban for family visits in the event of illness, death or childbirth
You have compelling reasons to visit your family in the Netherlands. This is really about traveling in exceptional cases such as:
- You visit a seriously ill (effective 15 May) or terminally ill family member or attend a funeral. You are a first-degree or second-degree relative. Fill the sick visit statement .
- You come to the Netherlands for the delivery of your legal partner. If you are not officially married, you have recognized the unborn child as your partner. You must also prove with a letter from the gynecologist or obstetrician that your partner has been pregnant for more than 34 weeks.
- Grandparents can travel to NL to visit their newborn grandchild. Fill the birth certificate .
- You are a divorced parent from a third country who wants to visit your child. Fill the statement divorced parent .
