Objecting to rejection of Schengen visa application
When your request for a visa for the Netherlands has been rejected, you can object. Here's how.
Is your visa application rejected for the Netherlands? Then you will receive an official message (decision) stating why the application has been rejected. You can within 4 weeks to object against this decision. How you object is in the decision. You will also find the address to which you can send your objection.
Reason for refusal
An important reason for a visa rejection is that the purpose and circumstances of the intended stay have not been sufficiently demonstrated. This has to do with proof that the visa applicant will return to the country of origin. This can be shown, for example, by documents proving the return to the country of origin. These are important in order to be able to rule out the risk of settlement as much as possible. Therefore always make sure you have the right documents.
Representing Schengen Member State
Did you apply for your visa for the Netherlands from a representative Schengen member state? And has your application been rejected? You can then only lodge an objection with the Member State where you applied for the visa.
Have someone else object
You may also authorize someone to object to the rejection of the visa application on your behalf. The letter of authorization must be written in one of the following languages:
- Dutch
- French
- German
- English
Have you applied for a visa in Turkey or Marokko to visit family or friends in the Netherlands? Then your family member or friend is the sponsor. This referee can also submit the objection for you online via the website of the IND.
No refund of visa application costs
If your visa application has been rejected, you will not be refunded the costs of the visa application.
Successfully lodged an objection?
Has your objection been granted? This means that the visa application has been approved. You can then make an appointment at the embassy or an external service provider, such as VFS Global or TLSContact.
Bring the following documents to your appointment:
- a valid travel document;
- the letter of approval (and a copy) stating that your objection has been granted;
- if applicable, the documents mentioned in the letter. For example, a flight or hotel reservation or proof of insurance.
It is not necessary to fill in a visa application form again. You also do not have to pay the visa fee again. Are you submitting the travel document and approval letter to an external service provider? Then you still pay service costs.
