Last year, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee denied more than 2.100 travelers entry to the Netherlands at the border. Most individuals were refused because they could pose a threat to public health.
An airline or ferry company also checks when boarding on departure to the Netherlands whether someone has the correct travel documents to travel to the Netherlands. The Marechaussee checks this again upon arrival. Almost 1.700 travelers were refused at Schiphol airport and about three hundred at Hoek van Holland, where a ferry from the United Kingdom arrives.
European entry ban for Schengen and the EU
Almost half of all refused travelers (more than 900) came from the United Kingdom. According to the Marechaussee, their refusal is the result of Brexit. For travelers from countries with a high Covid-19 risk outside the European Union/a Schengen, the European entry ban applies. This means that they are the European Union and the Schengen area, of which the Netherlands is a part, are not allowed to travel, unless they fall under an exception category. As a result of Brexit, the British are no longer exempt from the European entry ban.
