Travel insurance for Schengen is important when someone visits the Netherlands or another Schengen country and comes from outside the EU. This person must, upon request at border control, be able to demonstrate that he or she insured for medical expenses and repatriation. If the foreigner is unable to do so, the person may be refused further travel.
What is the Schengen Area or Schengen Countries?
The Schengen area is a collaboration of 26 European member states that have a common border and visa policy, we call these countries Schengen countries of Schengen states. The Member States are therefore bound by the same visa rules, which are laid down in the common Visa Code, EU Regulation 810/2009/EC. This allows travelers to move within the entire Schengen area without mutual border checks, visa holders only have one visa – the Schengen visa – needed to cross the external border of the Schengen area. So you can visit a total of 1 countries in Europe with 27 visa.
Schengen travel insurance is compulsory
What many do not know is that every traveler from outside the EU must be able to prove that he is insured. Travel insurance for Schengen is mandatory. It does not matter whether you can travel without a visa or whether you are required to have a visa. Schengen travel insurance may be taken out in the country of origin, but it is more reliable with a Dutch insurer because not all foreign travel insurance policies meet the EU conditions.
Schengen travel insurance for a visa application
At the EU level, it has been decided to make medical travel insurance a condition for issuing a short stay visa (Schengen visa). Therefore, when applying for a short-stay visa, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that Schengen travel insurance has been taken out. Travel insurance for Schengen must meet the following EU conditions:
- The validity of this travel insurance must be equal to the total visa period.
- The travel insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries (minimum Europe coverage).
- The travel insurance must cover repatriation costs and urgent medical expenses.
- The cover for medical costs must be at least € 30.000.
The insurance may be taken out by a guarantor, sponsor or family member in the Netherlands. The sponsor is then the policyholder and the visa applicant is the insured. The Schengen insurance policy can then be forwarded to the visa applicant.
Conditions and rules for visa-free travel
Although you do not need a visa, you can be checked at Schiphol (Koninklijke Marechaussee), at the border or at the Aliens Police (AVIM) to see whether you meet the conditions for entering and staying in the Netherlands. The following documents may be requested:
- A valid travel document, for example a passport. The travel document must be valid for 3 months after the end of your stay in the Netherlands. It should also not be older than 10 years.
- Evidence that demonstrates your purpose of travel. For example:
- A reservation for a hotel or other accommodation; or
- An invitation from the person with whom you will be staying in the Netherlands.
- Evidence that shows that you have sufficient financial means for the stay in the Netherlands, the transit and/or the return journey. You must be able to demonstrate that you have access to € 55 per day. This can be done, for example: with one or more bank statements, traveller's checks or cash. Does someone in the Netherlands guarantee the costs of your trip and accommodation? Then make sure you have the form 'proof of guarantee and/or private accommodation' with you. It is then not mandatory to legalize the signature at the municipality.
- A copy of proof of a Schengen travel insurance which is closed in your name. The person in the Netherlands who invites you can also take out the insurance for you. The Schengen medical travel insurance covers at least €30.000 for medical expenses in the Schengen area. The insurance covers in any case the following costs:
- Costs for returning to the country of origin for medical reasons.
- Urgent medical care.
- Emergency treatment in hospital.
- Evidence that demonstrates that you have sufficient reasons to return to your country of origin or residence. For example:
- An employer statement.
- Proof of enrollment in a school of school-going children.
- Proof of ownership of an owner-occupied home and/or other immovable property.
- An option on or (provisional) reservation of a return ticket.

Medical travel insurance and guarantee
If you guarantee a foreign guest or partner who wants to visit the Netherlands, it is advisable to take out medical travel insurance yourself. Not only is this a requirement for your guest's visa application, but it also provides financial protection for you. As a guarantor, you are financially responsible for any medical costs that your guest incurs during their stay in the Netherlands, and these costs can be significant.
By taking out the insurance yourself and sending the policy to the visa applicant by email, you have control over the process. It is advisable to ensure that you are the policyholder (the person paying the premium) and that your guest is the insured person. A major advantage of this is that any damage payments are transferred to you instead of to your guest's bank account.
A good option for this situation is Travel Risk Insurance from Allianz Global Assistance. This is an excellent travel medical insurance policy specifically designed for Schengen visa applications. It provides the necessary coverage and meets the requirements for obtaining a Schengen visa. By taking out this insurance, you ensure that you meet the visa requirements and offer both yourself and your guest financial protection during their stay in the Netherlands.
Stake out Schengen insurance with a Dutch insurer
Taking out medical Schengen insurance with a Dutch insurer has several advantages, especially for those who guarantee a foreign guest or partner. Some important benefits are:
- Dutch law: By choosing a Dutch insurer, the insurance falls under the Dutch legal system. This means that you as a consumer are protected by Dutch law, which offers you rights and guarantees.
- Strict supervision: Dutch insurers are under strict supervision by Dutch supervisors, such as the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). This supervision ensures that these insurers are reliable and meet high quality and integrity requirements.
- Reliability: In general, Dutch insurers are considered more reliable than some foreign insurers. This is due to the strict supervision and good reputation of the Dutch insurance market.
- Ease of communication: If you take out insurance with a Dutch insurer, you can communicate in your own language. This is particularly useful for questions, problems or claims. It prevents language barriers and makes the process easier and more understandable.
- No International Call Charges: You do not have to call abroad for questions or claims, which prevents costs and possible complications with international calls.
All these factors make taking out Schengen travel insurance with a Dutch insurer an attractive choice, especially in case of high costs or complex situations. It provides security, convenience and accessibility, contributing to a smoother experience for both the guarantor and the visa applicant.
