Schengen visa application
You must always apply for a Schengen visa in person if you have not yet issued any biometric data. You make an appointment online with the Dutch embassy or, in many cases, with an external service provider such as VFS Global. You will receive confirmation of this appointment by e-mail. On the agreed date and time, you will visit the VFS Global office, where all mandatory documents for Schengen visa, such as the visa application form, the travel medical insurance policy will be checked and collected. They check whether the application is complete and send the documents, together with the passport of the visa applicant, to the CSO in The Hague for assessment. The Consular Service Organization (CSO) processes all visa applications and applications for Dutch travel documents abroad.
A Schengen visa application for the Netherlands can be submitted at the earliest 6 months and no later than 15 calendar days before the intended date of entry. It then takes a maximum of 15 days for the assessment of your visa application. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, the waiting time for applying for a visa for the Netherlands is currently longer than normal, so make sure you apply well in time.
Medical travel insurance compulsory
In 2004, the EU decided in Brussels to introduce compulsory medical insurance as a condition for issuing a Short Stay Visa (Schengen Visa). Therefore, when applying for a visa, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that travel medical insurance has been taken out. This can be done by showing a copy or the original policy. The medical travel insurance must meet the following Schengen conditions:
- The validity of this travel insurance must be equal to the total visa period.
- The travel insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries (minimum Europe coverage).
- The travel insurance must cover repatriation costs and urgent medical expenses.
- The cover for medical costs must be at least € 30.000.
The insurance may be taken out by a guarantor, sponsor or family member in the Netherlands. The sponsor is then the policyholder and the visa applicant is the insured. The Schengen insurance policy can then be forwarded to the visa applicant. A Schengen travel insurance policy and the policy conditions may be drawn up in Dutch or English. The decision official who assesses the visa application is a Dutch official.
