Note: This information is no longer current. Since September 17, 2022, there are no longer any corona rules for travelers to the Netherlands. You can travel to the Netherlands without a long-distance relationship statement, proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or negative test result. If you are subject to a visa requirement, you must of course first apply for a Schengen visa.
An entry ban applies to the Netherlands, the European Union/Schengen area due to the corona pandemic. The entry ban was further tightened on 23-01-2021, so partners with a long-distance relationship are no longer allowed to enter the Netherlands for the time being.
The list of exception categories for the EU entry ban for the Netherlands has now been adjusted. This is due to the current developments surrounding the COVID-19 situation in the Netherlands and the rest of the world.
The following exceptions to the EU entry ban have been suspended and are not allowed to enter the Netherlands until further notice:
- Business travelers;
- students who want to stay in the Netherlands for a period of less than three months to study;
- Knowledge migrants who want to stay in the Netherlands for a period of less than three months for work;
- Professionals from the cultural and creative sector;
- Foreign partners in the context of the 'Long distance arrangement loved ones'.
Travelers who fall under these categories are therefore no longer exempt from the EU entry ban and are not allowed to travel to the Netherlands, unless they have already received proof of permission to travel to the Netherlands for their purpose of travel before 23 January.
This limitation of the exceptions to the entry ban applies in any case until the moment that the statutory quarantine obligation has been arranged in the Netherlands. This means that entry to the Netherlands will be refused if you travel to the Netherlands for one of these travel purposes.
The receipt of proof of permission does not mean that you automatically gain access to the Netherlands. The regular border control procedure according to European regulations still applies, such as the possession of a Schengen visa for visa-required foreigners. The Dutch border official can still refuse you entry to the Netherlands if you do not meet other entry requirements for the Netherlands.
