What is a Schengen travel insurance? What can you do with it and what must it meet? We will explain that.
Those who are subject to a visa requirement, i.e. must apply for a Schengen visa to travel to the Netherlands, must be able to demonstrate that they are insured for medical costs during their stay in the Schengen area. This is possible with a Schengen travel insurance.
Schengen visa travel insurance is an insurance policy specially designed for persons who have applied for a Schengen visa. This type of insurance provides cover for medical expenses and other unexpected events that may occur during a trip to the Schengen zone.
A Schengen visa travel insurance is mandatory for persons applying for a Schengen visa. This is because the Schengen countries require that travelers applying for a visa have sufficient financial resources to travel and stay in the Schengen zone, and that they do not have to rely on public health care during their stay.
A Schengen visa travel insurance policy provides cover for medical costs that may arise during a stay in the Schengen zone, such as emergency medical treatment.
What is Schengen travel insurance for a visa?
A Schengen travel insurance is medical insurance that meets the requirements set by the European Council for obtaining a Schengen visa. In March 2004, the EU decided in Brussels to introduce compulsory medical insurance from 1 June 2004 as a condition for issuing a short stay visa (Schengen visa). The Schengen insurance policy must be taken out for foreign guests requiring a visa and must be submitted when applying for a visa for the Netherlands.
If you bring family, friends or a partner from abroad, a Schengen visa must be applied for from an external service provider in the country of origin. The visa applicant must be able to demonstrate that travel medical insurance has also been taken out that meets the Schengen conditions. Proof of this – the policy – must be presented during the visa application or when the visa is collected.
What requirements must a Schengen travel insurance meet?
The Schengen travel insurance must cover any expenses related to repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and/or emergency hospital treatment. The medical travel insurance to be taken out must cover the entire Schengen area be valid, have a minimum cover of €30.000 and cover the entire duration of the intended stay.
The medical Schengen insurance must be valid at least in all 27 countries that together form the Schengen area.
What is the Schengen Area?
The Schengen area is a collaboration of 27 European member states that conduct a common border and visa policy, we call these countries Schengen countries or Schengen states. The Member States are therefore bound by the same visa rules, which are laid down in the common Visa Code, EU Regulation 810/2009/EC. This allows travelers to move within the entire Schengen area without mutual border checks, visa holders only need one visa, the Schengen visa, to cross the external border of the Schengen area.
The Schengen zone consists of 27 countries:
Belgium | Denmark | Germany |
Estonia | Finland | France |
Greece | Hungary | Italy |
Latvia | Liechtenstein | Lithuania |
Luxembourg | Malta | The Netherlands |
Norway | Austria | Poland |
Portugal | Slovenia | Slovakia |
Spain | Czech Republic | Iceland |
Sweden | Switzerland | Croatia |
Note: The EU countries Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom are not Schengen countries.
Why is a Schengen travel insurance mandatory for a visa application?
When applying for or collecting the visa, the visa applicant must be able to demonstrate that Schengen travel insurance has been taken out for the period of stay in the Netherlands. The reason for this is that the Schengen countries do not want to pay for any costs of a foreign guest, such as hospital costs. A travel insurance is also a (financial) protection for someone who acts as a guarantor.

Yes, that is not a problem. You are then the policyholder (pays the premium) and the foreign guest is the insured.
You authorize the insurer for direct debit on the application form. The premium is usually debited from your payment account just before the start date of the insurance.
No, if a visa application is rejected and the insurance has not yet commenced, you will receive a full refund of the premium.
You will receive the policy digitally by e-mail (including the conditions). You can then e-mail the policy to your foreign guest.
Basically the same day or the next day. Requests received over the weekend will be processed on Monday.
Before the policy has taken effect, the start date and/or end date of the policy can be adjusted, no problem at all.
If there is a guarantee (the foreign guest stays with the guarantor), the travel insurance is also for the financial protection of that person. With a Dutch travel insurance you fall under Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea at high costs.
The travel insurance for foreigners provides cover for the provision of assistance, the reimbursement of extraordinary costs and medical costs:
– Assistance: you can count on professional help and advice 24 hours a day in the event of illness or accidents.
– Repatriation: costs for repatriation (return to home country) due to illness or death.
– Extraordinary costs: costs that must be incurred in an emergency (such as extra travel or accommodation costs) will be reimbursed.
– Medical costs: medical costs incurred as a result of an accident or illness during the period of validity of the insurance are insured up to a maximum of € 30.000.
– Dental costs: incurred as a result of an accident.
– Theft of your travel documents.
– Delayed arrival of the luggage.
With the Travel Risk insurance you are insured against corona if you go to the Netherlands.
In Europe you are only insured for corona in yellow areas (travel advice).
No, this travel insurance is not intended for that. The costs for pregnancy are for your own account.
Ailments and complaints that already existed on or before the commencement date of the insurance are not insured and are therefore not eligible for compensation. The travel insurance for foreigners is only intended for sudden and unexpected medical costs in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries.
