If a foreign guest requiring a visa wants to travel to the Netherlands, a short-stay Schengen visa must first be applied for at the Dutch embassy in the country of origin. The visa applicant must therefore have insurance that covers medical expenses and repatriation.
What requirements must an insurance policy for a Schengen visa meet?
De medical travel insurance must meet the following EU conditions for a Schengen visa:
- The validity of this insurance must be equal to the stay in the Netherlands.
- The insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries (minimum Europe coverage).
- The insurance must cover repatriation costs and urgent medical costs for a minimum of € 30.000.
Who can take out the insurance?
The insurance may be taken out by a guarantor, sponsor or family member in the Netherlands. The sponsor is then the policyholder and the visa applicant is the insured. The policy of the insurance for a Schengen visa can then be forwarded to the visa applicant.
A policy for this insurance and the policy conditions may be drawn up in Dutch or English. After all, the official who assesses the visa application is a Dutch official.
Details of insurance for a Schengen visa
An insurance for foreign travelers coming to the Netherlands is comparable to a travel insurance that we take out when you go on holiday, but less extensive. We list the most important features of the insurance for a Schengen visa:
- The insurance for foreigners is only intended for sudden and unexpected medical costs during a stay in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries.
- Insurance is only for emergency medical care. If there is no urgency, the foreign guest must go to a doctor or hospital in his own country.
- Existing complaints, illnesses and ailments are excluded.
- Pregnancy is excluded (with the exception of acute situations such as preeclampsia).
- The insurance must be taken out before the foreign guest leaves for the Netherlands.
Insurance and guarantee
Do you guarantee your foreign guest or partner? Then take out the insurance yourself and send the policy to the visa applicant by e-mail. The insurance is also for your financial protection. After all, you are financially responsible for any medical costs and these can be substantial. If you take out a policy, we advise you to ensure that you are the policyholder (premium payer) and your guest is the insured. The advantage of this is that any damage payment will also be transferred to you and not to your guest's bank account.
Stake out the insurance for a Schengen visa with a Dutch insurer
With a Dutch insurer you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea in case of high costs. In case of questions or problems, you can also tell your story in your own language and you do not have to call or correspond with other countries and also in a foreign language.
