Since June 1, 2004, it has been mandatory in all Schengen countries to have a medical travel insurance to close for an application Schengen visa. When applying for a Schengen visa, the applicant must submit the policy as proof. This must meet the conditions of the EU.
Here you can read useful tips on how to take out such insurance quickly and cheaply and what exactly you should pay attention to.
Tips for taking out medical travel insurance
The tips below are important if you want to take out medical travel insurance for a foreign guest:
Tip 1. Make sure that the guarantor is also the policyholder
Do you guarantee your foreign guest or partner? Then take out the medical travel insurance yourself and send the policy to the visa applicant by e-mail. The travel insurance is also for your financial protection. After all, as a guarantor you are financially responsible for any medical costs and these can be substantial. If you take out a policy, we advise you to ensure that you are the policyholder (premium payer) and your guest is the insured. The advantage of this is that any damage payment will also be transferred to you and not to your guest's bank account.
You can contact our partner Travel Insurance Discount for all your questions about medical travel insurance for a Schengen visa. The office is open on working days during office hours. They are easy to reach by phone and have a lot of experience with medical travel insurance for Schengen visas.
Tip 2. Take out Schengen insurance with a Dutch insurer
With a Dutch travel insurer you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea in the case of high medical costs. You can also tell your story in your own language if you have questions or problems and you do not have to call abroad.
Tip 3. Check whether you will get the premium back in the event of a visa rejection
It is possible that a visa for the Netherlands will be rejected. In that case, you would like a refund of the premium of the medical travel insurance. Not all insurers do that, so keep that in mind.
The following applies to Reisverzekeringkorting.nl: If a visa is rejected and the policy has not yet commenced, the premium will be refunded and the insurance will lapse. And as long as the policy has not yet taken effect, you can have it adjusted free of charge, for example because the visa date has changed.
Tip 4. Check whether the medical travel insurance meets all Schengen requirements
The European Union sets the following requirements for travel medical insurance for a visa application:
- The validity of this travel insurance must be equal to the total visa period.
- The travel insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries (minimum Europe coverage).
- The travel insurance must cover repatriation costs and medical costs.
- The cover for urgent medical expenses must be at least € 30.000.
At Reisverzekeringkorting.nl, the medical travel insurance for a visa meets all the above requirements.
Tip 5. Be aware of what your foreign guest is and is not insured for
Travel medical insurance for a Schengen visa is only intended for emergency medical care. Existing diseases and ailments are excluded. Does your foreign guest take medication? Then make sure that he or she brings enough stock to the Netherlands. Pregnancies are not covered by this insurance.
Tip 6. Make sure you get the policy on time
Of course you don't feel like having to wait weeks for a policy, especially if your guest already has an appointment at the Dutch embassy or VFS Global.
At Reisverzekeringkorting.nl you will receive the policy soon after your application. Usually the same or next day. You will also receive the policy conditions. Is there an urgent need? Then we can ensure that you receive the original policy by e-mail within an hour.
Tip 7. Let your guest take the policy with them on their trip
Does your guest already have a Schengen visa? Then make sure that he or she always carries copies of the supporting documents and the insurance policy. A Schengen visa does not give an automatic right of entry to the Schengen area. During border control, the Marechaussee can ask again to provide all information and/or to submit documents.

Basically the same day or the next day. Requests received over the weekend will be processed on Monday.
Before the policy has taken effect, the start date and/or end date of the policy can be adjusted, no problem at all.
If there is a guarantee (the foreign guest stays with the guarantor), the insurance is also for the financial protection of that person. With a Dutch insurance you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea in case of high costs.
No, the insurance is not intended for that. The costs for pregnancy are for your own account.
Ailments and complaints that already existed on or before the commencement date of the insurance are not insured and are therefore not eligible for compensation. The insurance for foreigners is only intended for sudden and unexpected medical costs in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries.
