Standard amounts that apply to a guarantor when applying for a Short Stay Visa
Do you want to guarantee someone who has a Short stay Schengen visa requests? Then your income (or that of the sponsor) must be at least equal to the standard amount.
The amount you must earn in order to stand as a guarantor is called the standard amount. The standard amount is equal to the statutory minimum wage. The minimum wage and the standard amount change every 6 months, on January 1 and July 1.
In addition, your income must be sustainable. The income is sustainable if you receive it for at least 12 months. Calculate this from the day the short-stay visa is applied for. Or the day that the person requiring a visa enters the Netherlands.
Standard amounts for a Schengen visa guarantee
The amounts below apply from July 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023:
- Sv-wage per month without holiday pay: €1995,-
- Social Security salary per month with holiday pay: €2.154,60
Explanation of financial requirements for a guarantor
In order to obtain a short-stay Schengen visa, the foreign guest must be able to demonstrate that he or she can financially afford the travel and stay in the Netherlands. For the Netherlands, the requirement is that the visa applicant can demonstrate that he or she has access to €55 per day. If the visa applicant does not have sufficient resources himself, a guarantor (the inviting party) must act as guarantor. The income of this person, the referent, is then looked at.
The income requirements for a guarantee are:
- You earn an independent income: this is an income on which you pay taxes and premiums.
- Your income is sustainable: this means that you receive your income long enough.
- You have sufficient income: this means that your income is high enough.
What is an independent income?
An independent income is an income that you earn yourself. Or a benefit for which you previously paid premiums.
- Income from paid employment: Income from work as an employee is independent if your employer deducts taxes and social security contributions from your salary.
- Income from own business: Do you work as an independent entrepreneur or freelancer? Then your income is independent if you pay tax on the profit from your business.
- Income from a benefit: A benefit is only independent income if you have paid taxes and social security contributions on it. This applies in any case to the following benefits:
- unemployment benefits;
- sickness benefit;
- disability benefit;
- AOW benefit.
Benefits paid from general funds are not independent income. This applies, for example, to a social security benefit, benefit under the Participation Act or a Wajong benefit.
- Income from equity: Income from equity is for example:
- dividends on stocks or bonds;
- interest on savings;
- profit on investments.
The equity itself is not income, only the income you receive from the equity. The source of equity should not be affected. This means that your equity, for example your savings, does not decrease. This income is independent if you have paid tax on it.
Financial protection for guarantor
It is important for the guarantor that the foreign guest is properly insured against medical expenses and repatriation (necessary return to the country of origin), otherwise you will have to pay for the costs. After all, you are financially responsible. Such insurance is also mandatory when applying for a visa for the Netherlands. You can take out this so-called medical travel insurance quickly and cheaply on this website.
The medical insurance can be taken out by an interested party in the Netherlands. The interested party can be a sponsor (guarantor/accommodation provider), but also a friend, family or partner of the foreign guest. In that case, the interested party is also the policyholder (premium payer) and the visa applicant (foreign guest) is the insured.
Tip: If you take out medical travel insurance for a Schengen visa, always make sure that you are the policyholder (premium payer) and the person for whom you are guarantor is the insured. That is wiser because then you know for sure that the premium has been paid and the insurance is actually valid. In addition, in the event of a claim payment, the money is transferred to the account of the policyholder. The guarantor then retains full control over the finances.
