A visa for a long stay in the Netherlands (residence permit)
Perhaps you have read a thing or two about a Short-Stay Visa ( Schengen visa ) and assume that a 'long-stay visa' for the Netherlands also exists (longer than 90 days). That is indeed the case, and this visa is called a Provisional Residence Authorization with a residence permit.
Do you want to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 90 days, for example for work or study? Or do you want to live with your family or partner in the Netherlands? Then you may need a long-stay visa and/or a residence permit. A long-stay visa is also known as an authorization for provisional residence (MVV). Whether you need an MVV and/or residence permit depends, among other things, on your nationality and your purpose of stay.
Are you from outside the European Union (EU)? Then in most cases you will need a residence permit. Sometimes you must first apply for an authorization for temporary stay (mvv). This is a special entry visa for the Netherlands and is stuck in your passport just like a Schengen visa. You can apply for the mvv and the subsequent residence permit with the combined procedure for Entry and Residence (TEV).
Your nationality is decisive
Your nationality determines whether you need to apply for an mvv. Even if you do not live in your country of origin or if you have a residence permit in another country. Do you have the nationality of one of the countries listed below? Then you do not need an mvv and you can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands without an mvv.

Are you an EU/EEA national or Swiss citizen ? Then you do not need to apply for a visa or residence permit. Are you a family member of an EU/EEA national or Swiss citizen ? Then you are not required to have a visa and can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands without a visa.

When applying for a visa and residence permit, you need a purpose of stay. For example, study, work, or visiting a family member. Each purpose of stay comes with conditions that you must meet. In addition, there are general conditions that apply to everyone.
Do you want to live with a family member or partner in the Netherlands? Then you must first pass the basic civic integration exam abroad before applying for the MVV.
Application for MVV for long stay
A visa is usually applied for by a sponsor in the Netherlands. A sponsor is the person with whom you wish to live in the Netherlands or the organization that arranges your stay in the Netherlands (for example, a school or employer). The sponsor applies for the visa at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
Don't have a reference? Then you can apply for the mvv yourself at the Dutch embassy. You do this in your country of origin or in another country where you have a residence permit.
