Is a foreign guest requiring a visa coming to the Netherlands with a Schengen visa for a short stay? Then one medical travel insurance, which meets certain conditions, is mandatory. Here you read useful tips what exactly you should pay attention to when taking out medical travel insurance for a Schengen visa.
Tip 1. Compare the conditions of the travel insurance
No medical travel insurance is the same. The conditions differ in parts. For example, not all insurers reimburse the following costs:
- Return travel costs in the event of an accident or death of the insured's family that is not traveling with him.
- Death of a co-insured travel companion.
- Funeral/cremation costs and family travel costs.
- Travel documents (purchase costs).
- Replacement clothing and/or toiletries.
- Damage to lodgings.
- Damage to insured property in the country of origin.
- Forced delay.
A Schengen visa travel insurance may seem cheaper at first glance, but then the reimbursements are often also deleted, in short, the coverage is more limited.
Tip 2. Look at the options for medical travel insurance
Sometimes you can expand a Schengen visa travel insurance policy with different options. This is useful if, for example, you want to go on holiday outside the EU with your foreign partner who is subject to a visa requirement. In that case you need medical travel insurance with worldwide coverage. When comparing, check whether you can also insure the following extensions:
- Winter sports and special sports
- Cancellation
- Global coverage
Tip 3. Make sure that the guarantor is also the policyholder
Do you guarantee your foreign guest or partner? Then always close the medical travel insurance and send the policy to the visa applicant by e-mail. The travel insurance is also for your financial protection. You are financially responsible for any medical costs and these can be substantial. If you take out a policy, we advise you to ensure that you are the policyholder (premium payer) and your guest is the insured. The advantage of this is that any damage payment will also be transferred to you and not to your guest's bank account.
Tip 4. Take out Schengen insurance with a Dutch insurer
With a Dutch travel insurer you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea at high costs. You can also tell your story in your own language if you have questions or problems and you do not have to call abroad.
Tip 5. Check whether you will get the premium back in the event of a visa rejection
A visa may be rejected. In that case, you would like a refund of the premium for the medical Schengen insurance. Not all insurers do that, so keep that in mind.
Tip 6. Check whether the medical travel insurance meets all EU requirements for Schengen insurance
The European Union sets the following requirements for medical travel insurance for Schengen visas:
- The validity of this travel insurance must be equal to the total visa period.
- The travel insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries (minimum Europe coverage).
- The travel insurance must cover repatriation costs and medical costs.
- The cover for medical costs must be at least € 30.000.
Tip 7. Remember the exclusions with this insurance
Medical travel insurance for a Schengen visa is only intended for urgent unexpected medical assistance. Existing diseases and ailments are always excluded. Does your guest take any medication? Then make sure that he or she brings enough stock to the Netherlands. Please note that pregnancies are never covered by these insurance policies.
Tip 8. Make sure you get the policy for Schengen insurance quickly
Of course you don't feel like spending days on a policy of yours Schengen insurance having to wait, especially if your guest already has an appointment for a visa application at the Dutch embassy or an external service provider.
Tip 9. Provide a point of contact for policy changes that is easily accessible
It may be that after taking out the Schengen visa travel insurance you want to make some adjustments, for example the start date of the policy because your guest is leaving on a different date. Then it is important that you have an easily accessible point of contact, for example the insurer or an intermediary. Make sure that you take out insurance with a party that can be reached by telephone for questions or changes to the policy. Always check an issued policy whether all the details of the insured are correct. And see if changes are made free of charge.
Tip 10. Let your guest take the policy with them on their trip
Has a Schengen visa already been issued and is your guest traveling to the Netherlands? Then make sure that he or she always carries copies of the supporting documents and the insurance policy. A Schengen visa does not give an automatic right of entry to the Schengen area. During border control, the Marechaussee can ask again to provide all information and/or to submit documents. It is therefore also checked whether medical travel insurance has been taken out for the foreign traveler.
