Visa-free travel from the Ukraine to the Netherlands? Read the entry conditions for the Netherlands here
Since 11 June 2017, residents of Ukraine are no longer required to have a visa if they want to travel to the Netherlands or another Schengen country. The condition is that they have one biometric passport to have. But other rules also apply, such as the obligation to take out medical travel insurance.
A visa is an official permission to enter and stay in a country. A visa is usually issued by the embassy or consulate of the country the traveler is going to. Ukrainians who want to go to the Netherlands for a tourist, family or partner visit do not need to apply for a Schengen visa in advance if they have a biometric passport.
A biometric passport (also known as an e-passport or a digital passport) is a traditional passport with an embedded electronic microprocessor chip that contains biometric information that can be used to verify the identity of the passport holder.
No biometric passport: apply for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands
If a Ukrainian does not have a biometric passport but still wants to travel to the Netherlands, a short-stay Schengen visa must first be applied for. A Schengen or Caribbean visa must then be applied for via the external service provider VFS Global. Make an appointment through VFS Global.
You can submit an application for a Schengen visa from Ukraine to the Netherlands at the earliest 6 months before your trip (9 months for seafarers) and at least 15 working days in advance.
You will usually know within 15 calendar days whether you will receive the visa. Sometimes more time is needed: the application can then take 45 days, for example if additional documents are required.
A Schengen visa sticker in your passport gives access to the 26 Schengen Member States in Europe. You can travel through a large part of Europe with a Schengen visa without having to apply for a separate visa for each country.
Conditions for visa-free travel from Ukraine to the Netherlands
Ukrainians who travel to the Netherlands for tourism, family or partner visits, for example, can do so without first applying for a visa. Nevertheless, there are strict rules for visa-free travel. For example, your guest from Ukraine must have:
- A valid travel document (biometric passport). The travel document must be valid for 3 months after the end of your stay in the Netherlands. It should also not be older than 10 years.
- Evidence that demonstrates your purpose of travel. For example:
- A reservation for a hotel or other accommodation; or
- An invitation from the person with whom you will be staying in the Netherlands.
- Evidence that shows that you have sufficient financial means for the stay in the Netherlands, the transit and/or the return journey. You must be able to demonstrate that you have access to € 55 per day. This can be done, for example: with one or more bank statements, traveller's checks or cash. Does someone in the Netherlands guarantee the costs of your trip and accommodation? Then make sure you have the form proof of guarantee and/or private accommodationhave with you. It is then not mandatory to legalize the signature at the municipality.
- A copy of proof of a medical travel insurance which is closed in your name. The person in the Netherlands who invites you can also take out the insurance for you. The medical travel insurance covers at least € 30.000 for medical costs in the Schengen area. The insurance will in any case cover the following costs:
- Costs for returning to the country of origin for medical reasons.
- Urgent medical care.
- Emergency treatment in hospital.
- Evidence that shows that you have sufficient reasons to return to Ukraine. For example:
- An employer statement.
- Proof of enrollment in a school of school-going children.
- Proof of ownership of an owner-occupied home and/or other immovable property.
- An option on or (provisional) reservation of a return ticket.
Official foreign documents must be legalized or apostilled and translated to Dutch, English, French or German.
Please note: If you do not meet the above conditions or cannot provide the required documents, for example the policy of a medical travel insurance, entry to the Netherlands and other Schengen countries may be refused.
How long can you stay in the Netherlands?
It does not matter for the period of stay in the Netherlands whether or not you need a Schengen visa. A foreign visitor/tourist may stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days out of 180. You can also enter and leave the Schengen area during this period. The 90 days can be spread over 180 days, but they can also be used all at once in a row. If you stay in the Netherlands/Schengen area for 90 days in a row, you will therefore have to wait 90 days before you can travel from the Ukraine to the Netherlands/Schengen area again.
