The Netherlands advocates that Russian tourists should not Schengen visa get more to be able to travel to Europe in this way. So says minister Wopke Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs against RTL News. In the coming days, the European foreign ministers will meet in Prague on this subject.
Hoekstra does want to make a clear distinction between visas for a tourist visit and other visas. Other categories are, for example, visas for study, family visits or long stays. The minister does not think that ordinary Russians should be punished for the war. Rich Russians, often with a relationship with the Kremlin, who come to the Netherlands to shop is a category that Hoekstra prefers to exclude.
Estonia and Finland have already indicated at an earlier stage that they want the countries of the EU not to Schengen visas give more to Russians who want to visit Europe as tourists. According to the two countries, it is not desirable that, now that Russia is at war in the Ukraine, the inhabitants of Russia can simply go on holiday to Europe. Latvia and the Czech Republic also do not want Russian tourists in Europe.
The EU has so far only introduced a visa ban for Russians placed on the European sanctions list. For the time being, the EU also only wants to discuss stopping the issuance of Schengen visas for Russian tourists and not to exclude all Russians.
