Medical insurance for visa application
If you bring family, friends or a partner from abroad to the Netherlands, a short-stay visa (Schengen visa) must be applied for at the Dutch embassy in the country of origin. The visa applicant must then also be able to demonstrate that medical insurance has also been taken out that meets the Schengen conditions. Proof of this – the policy – must be presented at the embassy during the visa application or when the visa is collected. The visitor is then well insured during his trip and stay in the Netherlands or elsewhere in Europe. Read more about the procedure for it here applying for a Schengen visa.
What are the requirements for medical insurance?
There are a number of requirements with regard to medical insurance when applying for a visa. In March 2004, the EU decided in Brussels to introduce mandatory travel insurance from 1 June 2004 as a condition for issuing a Schengen visa. These conditions are:
- Coverage for emergency medical assistance and repatriation of at least €30.000
- Must be valid in all Schengen member states.
- Must provide cover for the entire duration of the stay in the schengen area.

Frequently asked questions and answers about medical insurance for a visa
When applying for or collecting the visa, the visa applicant must be able to demonstrate that medical insurance has been taken out for the period of stay in the Netherlands. The reason for this is that the Schengen countries do not want to pay for any costs of a foreign guest, such as hospital costs. A medical insurance is also a (financial) protection for someone who acts as a guarantor.
The medical insurance must cover any expenses related to repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and/or emergency hospital treatment. The medical insurance to be taken out must be valid for the entire Schengen area, have a minimum cover of €30.000 and cover the entire duration of the intended stay. Proof of the original insurance policy must be submitted when submitting the application or only when the visa is issued.
Yes, that is not a problem. You are then the policyholder (pay the premium) and the foreign guest is the insured.
You authorize the insurer for direct debit on the application form. The premium is usually debited from your payment account just before the start date of the insurance.
No, if a visa application is rejected and the insurance has not yet commenced, you will receive a full refund of the premium.
You will receive the policy digitally by e-mail (including the conditions). You can then e-mail the policy to your foreign guest.
Basically the same day or the next day. Requests received over the weekend will be processed on Monday.
Before the policy has taken effect, the start date and/or end date of the policy can be adjusted, no problem at all.
If there is a guarantee (the foreign guest stays with the guarantor), the insurance is also for the financial protection of that person. With a Dutch insurance you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea in case of high costs.
The insurance for foreigners provides cover for the provision of assistance, the reimbursement of extraordinary costs and medical costs:
– Assistance: you can count on professional help and advice 24 hours a day in the event of illness or accidents.
– Repatriation: costs for repatriation (return to home country) due to illness or death.
– Extraordinary costs: costs that must be incurred in an emergency (such as extra travel or accommodation costs) will be reimbursed.
– Medical costs: medical costs as a result of an accident or illness incurred during the period of validity of the insurance are insured up to a maximum of € 30.000.
– Dental costs: incurred as a result of an accident.
– Theft of your travel documents.
– Delayed arrival of the luggage.
No, this insurance is not intended for that. The costs for pregnancy are for your own account.
Ailments and complaints that already existed on or before the commencement date of the insurance are not insured and are therefore not eligible for compensation. The medical insurance for foreigners is exclusively intended for sudden and unexpected medical costs in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries.
