A medical travel insurance for a Schengen visa, is insurance that meets the EU conditions for obtaining a Schengen visa. This policy must be taken out for visits by foreign guests requiring a visa and must be shown at the embassy when applying for a visa for the Netherlands.
Schengen visa for a short stay in the Netherlands
When a foreigner from outside the Schengen area intends to for one short stay to travel to the Netherlands, he or she may need to apply for a visa, which depends on his or her nationality. .
Since 1995, within the Schengen area, which consists of a number of European countries, there has been no internal border control. These countries issue a “common” visa: the Schengen visa. Formally, this is called a Short Stay Visa. A visa is one of the conditions for gaining access to the Netherlands and the other Schengen countries. A Schengen visa is a sticker that is stuck in the travel document (for example a passport). A visa indicates that at the time of issue there is no objection to the arrival of the foreigner for a short stay. The Dutch government checks in advance whether someone is eligible for a Schengen visa. The visa is valid for a limited period (maximum 90 days).
Mandatory medical travel insurance
The European Council decided in 2004 that a medical travel insurance for Schengen must be discussed. This Schengen visa insurance applies to cover any expenses for the foreign national subject to a visa requirement, such as repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care or emergency treatment in a hospital. The insurance must provide coverage in all Schengen member states (Europe coverage) and be valid for the entire duration of the stay. The minimum cover is € 30.000.–
A person who wants to travel to the Netherlands must be able to demonstrate with the visa application that travel medical insurance has also been taken out that meets the EU conditions. Proof of this – the policy – must be presented at the embassy during the visa application or when the visa is collected.
Take out insurance in the Netherlands
The medical travel insurance for a guest requiring a visa can be taken out by someone from the Netherlands, for example the guarantor, family member or partner. The person in the Netherlands is then the policyholder (premium payer) and the foreign guest is then the insured. You take out the policy online and send it to the visa applicant by e-mail.
The take out medical travel insurance in the Netherlands also has a number of advantages. With a Dutch travel insurer you are subject to Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. That is a nice idea in case of high costs. You can also tell your story in your own language if you have questions or problems and you do not have to call or litigate abroad.
