Medical travel insurance for Brazilians visiting the Netherlands

Are you planning to bring family, a partner or friend from Brazil to the Netherlands for a short stay? Then you have to prepare well and take into account a number of entry conditions. Brazilians are not required to have a visa for the Netherlands, but medical travel insurance, for example, is mandatory. Not having the correct documents can lead to an entry ban.

Brazilians are not required to have a visa for Schengen

Foreign nationals from a number of countries, including Brazil, do not require a visa. This means that a Brazilian does not need to apply for a Schengen visa in advance. However, the intended length of stay may not exceed 90 days. Thereafter, a period of 180 days applies before the same person from Brazil may travel to the Netherlands or another Schengen country again.

Your family or partner from Brazil does not need to apply for a Schengen visa to visit the Netherlands. This does not mean that there is an automatic right to admission to the Netherlands or the Schengen area. It is common for border checks and other checks to require information. This information may relate to:

• The financial resources of your guest from Brazil.
• The duration of the stay.
• The purpose of the journey.

A Brazilian who visits the Netherlands or another Schengen country may not pose a threat to public order, national security or international relations.

Conditions and rules for Brazilians to travel visa-free

​Although someone from Brazil does not need a Schengen visa, you can be checked at Schiphol (Koninklijke Marechaussee), at the border or at the Aliens Police (AVIM) to see whether you meet the conditions for entering and staying in the Netherlands. The following documents may be requested:

• A valid travel document, for example a passport. The travel document must be valid for 3 months after the end of your stay in the Netherlands. It should also not be older than 10 years.
• Evidence that demonstrates your purpose of travel. For example:
  • A reservation for a hotel or other accommodation; or
  • An invitation from the person with whom you will be staying in the Netherlands.
• Evidence that shows that you have sufficient financial means for the stay in the Netherlands, the transit and/or the return journey. You must be able to demonstrate that you have access to € 55 per day. This can be done, for example: with one or more bank statements, traveller's checks or cash. Does someone in the Netherlands guarantee the costs of your trip and accommodation? Then make sure you have the form proof of guarantee and/or private accommodationhave with you. It is then not mandatory to legalize the signature at the municipality.
• A copy of proof of a medical travel insurance which is closed in your name. The person in the Netherlands who invites you can also take out the insurance for you. The medical travel insurance covers at least € 30.000 for medical costs in the Schengen area. The insurance will in any case cover the following costs:
  • Costs for returning to the country of origin for medical reasons.
  • Urgent medical care.
  • Emergency treatment in hospital.
• Evidence that demonstrates that you have sufficient reasons to return to your country of origin or residence. For example:
  • An employer statement.
  • Proof of enrollment in a school of school-going children.
  • Proof of ownership of an owner-occupied home and/or other immovable property.
• An option on or (provisional) reservation of a return ticket.

Official foreign documents must be legalized or apostilled and translated into Dutch, English, French or German.

Please note: If your Brazilian visit does not meet the above conditions or cannot provide the required documents, entry to the Netherlands and other Schengen countries may be refused.

Take out medical travel insurance for your guest from Brazil

Do you guarantee your Brazilian guest? This travel insurance also aims to protect the guarantor against high financial costs. Therefore, take out good travel insurance, preferably in the Netherlands. With a Dutch travel insurance you fall under Dutch law. Dutch insurers are subject to strict supervision and are usually more reliable than foreign insurers. If you have to rely on travel insurance, that is a nice idea.

• You will receive the policy very quickly after your application, usually the same or the next day. You will also receive the policy conditions.
• As long as the policy has not yet taken effect, you can have it adjusted free of charge, for example because the visa date appears to be different.

* Medical costs are monetary compensation for doctors (fees) and costs of:

• hospitalization;
• operation and operating room use;
• prescribed X-rays and radioactive irradiations;
• prescription medications, bandages and massage;
• medically necessary transport, including any medically necessary evacuation and transport from a ski slope.

Your travel documents (purchase costs, laissez-passer, replacement visa or other official travel document), replacement clothing and/or toiletries and damage to accommodation is also insured. The following is also covered:

• illness, accident or missing person of the insured;
• death of the insured, illness, accident or death of the insured's family not traveling with him;
• death of a co-insured travel companion;
• damage to property of the insured in the country of residence;
• costs due to forced delay.
