French President Emmanuel Macron wants free travel in the Schengen zone and he is going to tighten up the controls at the French borders considerably. He said this on Thursday (November 5, 2020) when visiting the Spanish border. Macron wants to counter illegal immigration and terrorism in this way.
A possible amendment to the Schengen treaty is on the agenda now that France is increasingly affected by terrorist attacks committed by immigrants.
According to Macron, illegal migration networks are often linked to Islamic terrorism. He therefore wants stricter border controls to combat illegal immigration.
The French president said he may want to discuss stricter measures in the Schengen zone with the other countries within the European Union.
