The European Union has unveiled the name of its new digital application platform Schengen visas: the EU Visa Application Platform (EU VAP).
This important step towards digitalization marks a transition period from traditional, in-person visa application procedures to a fully online system, which will last up to seven years.
Member states will be given the choice whether or not to switch to this new system and can choose to continue issuing Schengen visas in the traditional way. This flexibility is an important aspect of the transition, taking into account the diverse needs and capacities of Member States.
The European Commission has approved the changes in the Schengen visa regulations and rules for the free movement of third-country nationals within the Schengen area. These adjustments are crucial for facilitating the digitalization of Schengen visas.
7-year transition period
The new platform will allow applicants to apply for their visa online. The EU has announced more details about the platform, including its name and the transition period from traditional to online procedures. This transition period is estimated at a maximum of seven years from the moment the platform becomes operational.
If a Member State decides to join the EU VAP during this period, this must be communicated to the European Commission and eu-LISA. The platform will end at Europe.eu, in accordance with the standard for official EU websites.
One notable change is that Schengen visas will be in a digital format, including a 2D barcode with a cryptographic signature of the issuing Member State. These digital visas will also contain the visa holder's photo and are printable.
EU VAP new platform for applying for Schengen visas
All travelers, regardless of their origin, can apply for a Schengen visa via the EU VAP. The system automatically determines which Member State is responsible for examining the application.
In specific cases, applicants may have to appear in person at the embassy, for example when applying for a first Schengen visa or a new travel document. A third person, who is authorized by or legally authorized to represent the applicant, can also submit a visa application. This person must be clearly identified in the application form.
Other changes include the method of payment of visa fees through a payment gateway linked to the EU VAP, the use of local languages for translating application forms in specific cases, and the receipt of electronic notifications about updates or new information regarding the visa application.
In addition, it is expected that EU systems such as the Entry Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will integrate with the EU VAP, taking into account Member States' current technological limitations and investments in their national systems.
