Conditions for a foreign partner requiring a visa to come to the Netherlands

A foreign partner requiring a visa can come to the Netherlands for a short or long stay, provided he/she meets a number of conditions.

When a foreign partner coming to the Netherlands, you can do so for a short stay (up to a maximum of 90 days) or a long stay (up to a maximum of 5 years or unlimited).

Partner to the Netherlands for a short stay

If you want your partner to come to the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days, you can request a Short-stay visa, type C On. Also known as a Schengen visa. Your partner may then stay here for a maximum of 90 days. After that, that person must return to the country of origin. When you want your businesses comes to live with you permanently, you can opt for the procedure that goes with a long stay.

Partner to the Netherlands for a long stay

If you want your partner to come to the Netherlands for 5 years or permanently, you will need an MVV visa (Authorisation for Temporary Residence). Your partner must do it first civic integration exam abroad to fetch. If that is achieved, you will receive an MVV for 90 days. The partner (sponsor) in the Netherlands simultaneously applies to the IND for a residence permit. The sponsor then follows the procedure for Entry and Residence (TEV procedure). The main person with whom the foreign national resides as a partner is the sponsor.

Residence permit for 5 years

The IND checks whether you meet all the conditions for a residence permit to get. You will hear within 90 days whether you will receive the residence permit or not. The residence permit is usually valid for 5 years and can be extended. After 5 years you can apply for a permanent residence permit. The residence permit is also called a long stay visa or called a 5 year visa.

You must meet the following conditions:

• You are unmarried.
• You are a Dutch national or you have had a residence permit for a non-temporary purpose for at least 1 year.
• You are 21 years or older
• A statement has been signed that you are the sponsor.
• There is a lasting and exclusive relationship with your foreign partner.
• You are registered in the Netherlands in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) of your place of residence (municipality).
• You have sufficient and sustainable income. The income that you must demonstrate is a gross monthly amount. This is the amount stated in the employment contract or salary specification (payslip).
• The income must be available for at least 12 months at the time of application.

Your foreign partner must meet the following conditions:

• Your partner is unmarried.
• He or she is 21 years or older.
• The foreign partner will start living with you as soon as they arrive in the Netherlands. Your partner registers at the same address where you live.
• Your partner has taken the civic integration examination abroad or has an exemption.
• The partner has a valid travel document (e.g. passport).
• The foreign partner does not pose a threat to public order and national security.
• Your partner is willing to participate in a tuberculosis study.
• The partner has not provided incorrect information or withheld any relevant information in a previous application for a residence permit.

Medical travel insurance for a foreign partner

For the application for a Short Stay Visa, your partner must demonstrate that medical travel insurance has been taken out that meets the requirements for a Schengen visa. You can easily make one yourself on this website medical travel insurance. You may be the policyholder (premium payer) and your guest is then the insured. You take out the policy and send it to the visa applicant by e-mail.

You must also be able to demonstrate that you have one for the application for a residence permit (5-year visa). medical travel insurance has been taken out so that your partner is insured against medical costs during your stay in the Netherlands.
