Traveling from Tunisia to the Netherlands? Schengen visa required and don't forget medical travel insurance!
Is someone from Tunisia coming to the Netherlands for a short stay of a maximum of 90 days, for example for family or partner visits? Then you must first apply for a Schengen visa at the Dutch embassy. A number of mandatory documents must therefore be submitted, including medical travel insurance that meets certain conditions.
A Schengen visa for the Netherlands can be applied for at the Dutch embassy in Tunis. The collection of the visa application form and mandatory documents is handled by an external service provider, VFS Global. Tunisians must also be able to submit a medical travel insurance policy that meets the EU conditions with the application.
You can arrange this compulsory travel insurance here quickly and cheaply, for only € 2 per person per day. Your guest from Tunisia is then insured for unexpected urgent medical expenses and repatriation. You will receive the policy the same day (on working days) and it is valid in all European countries except the country of origin.

What is a short-stay Schengen visa?
A Schengen visa is a joint visa for all Schengen states and gives access to the 26 Schengen member states in Europe. You can travel through a large part of Europe with a Schengen visa without having to apply for a separate visa for each country.
What is the validity period of a Schengen visa for travelers from Tunisia?
The stay in the Schengen area is limited to a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days for visa-requiring and non-visa-requiring persons from outside the EU.
This means that a Tunisian who has been in the Schengen area for 90 days may only return to the Netherlands after he has been outside the Schengen area for 90 days.
A Schengen visa is in principle valid for 6 months from the date of issue. The stay in the Schengen area must take place within these 6 months. The return journey may therefore not take place after the expiry date.
Where should someone from Tunisia apply for a visa for Schengen?
Travelers from Tunisia must submit the application for a Schengen visa to the Dutch embassy in Tunis. If you plan to visit several Schengen states, you must apply for the visa at the embassy of the Schengen country where you will be staying the longest. If you plan to visit several Schengen states and will stay for the same length of time, you must apply for a visa at the embassy of the country whose external borders you will cross first upon entering the Schengen area.

What does a Tunisian need for a visa application?
- You must present a passport of Tunisia or other official travel document with at least 2 blank pages. The travel document must have been issued within the last 10 years. This must be valid for at least 3 months after the date on which you want to leave the Schengen area.
- You provide a completed and signed form visa application form in. Each person traveling on your travel document must submit their own form. Forms for children under the age of 18 must be signed by a parent or guardian.
- Are you under the age of 18 and traveling without (1 of) your parents or guardian? Then leave them the consent form fill in (in English). The border control may ask for this upon entry into the Netherlands.
- You provide one passport photo according to Dutch requirements .
- You have your fingerprints taken. You do this when you submit your application. These remain valid for 59 months. For some applicants, such as children under the age of 12, this is not necessary. Have you provided biometrics (fingerprints and photo) within the last 59 months prior to your current application? Then you can choose to have your application submitted by someone else. You do not have to appear in person.
You must also meet the following conditions:
- You are not a threat to public order, national security or the international relations of one of the Schengen countries.
- You have a destination in the Netherlands. For example, a hotel reservation or an invitation from a referent (partner, family, friend, etc.) in the Netherlands. This sponsor has a valid residence permit or is a Dutch national. The sponsor uses the Proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form.
- You have sufficient financial means for the stay in the Netherlands, the transit and/or the return journey:
- You have at least € 55 per person per day for the duration of your stay in the Netherlands or someone in the Netherlands guarantees you. This can be the inviting referent, but also a random third person. The guarantor has sufficient income. At the time of the application, this income must still be available for at least 12 months. The sponsor uses the Proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form, together with the additional documents listed under checklist.
- You have (medical) travel insurance that has been taken out in the name of the visa applicant. The person in the Netherlands who invites you can also take out the insurance for you. The insurance has a minimum cover of € 30.000 for medical costs in the Schengen area. The insurance will in any case cover the following costs:
- Costs for returning to the country of origin for medical reasons (repatriation).
- Urgent medical care and emergency treatment in hospital.
- You have sufficient reasons to return to your country of origin or residence. For example, because you have a job there, (school-going) children or your own house. A return ticket alone is not enough to prove this.
Please note: If, when assessing your application, it turns out that your fingerprints are not in the system, you must still provide them. You can also always be called for an interview if your request gives cause to do so.

Medical travel insurance and guarantee
If you guarantee a foreign guest or partner who wants to visit the Netherlands, it is advisable to take out medical travel insurance yourself. Not only is this a requirement for your guest's visa application, but it also provides financial protection for you. As a guarantor, you are financially responsible for any medical costs that your guest incurs during their stay in the Netherlands, and these costs can be significant.
By taking out the insurance yourself and sending the policy to the visa applicant by email, you have control over the process. It is advisable to ensure that you are the policyholder (the person paying the premium) and that your guest is the insured person. A major advantage of this is that any damage payments are transferred to you instead of to your guest's bank account.
A good option for this situation is Travel Risk Insurance from Allianz Global Assistance. This is an excellent travel medical insurance policy specifically designed for Schengen visa applications. It provides the necessary coverage and meets the requirements for obtaining a Schengen visa. By taking out this insurance, you ensure that you meet the visa requirements and offer both yourself and your guest financial protection during their stay in the Netherlands.
Frequently asked questions and answers about applying for a Schengen visa Tunisia – the Netherlands (FAQ)
Yes, Tunisians are required to have a visa for the Netherlands.
De Travel Risk Insurance from Allianz Global Assistance is an excellent insurance, meets all requirements and is always accepted by the embassy and VFS Global. Allianz Global Assistance is the largest travel insurer in the world and has been chosen several times as the best travel insurer in the Netherlands.
No, if the visa has been rejected and the insurance has not yet taken effect, the policy will be canceled and you will not have to pay anything. So you run no risk.
An application must match the situation of the applicant and possibly the referee. Someone claiming to have a full-time job in their country of origin or residence is not very credible when applying for a 90-day visa. With a first visa application you are usually only eligible for a single entry. A visa can also be issued for two or multiple entries. It is therefore best for someone who travels frequently from Tunisia to ask for multiple entry. Substantiate this as well as possible to demonstrate that you want to travel frequently. If the embassy considers the foreign national bona fide and sees the need for multiple entries, there is a good chance of a multiple entry visa (MEV). If you have been to the Netherlands with a Schengen visa before without any problems, you can apply for a multi-entry next time.
Yes that is allowed. You do not necessarily have to arrive via the Netherlands, provided you make it plausible that the Netherlands is still the main purpose of the trip. You are then free, for example, to cross the external border via Germany and to travel from there to the Netherlands. Make sure you have all supporting documents for your visa application with you.
In normal situations, the embassy will make a decision within 15 calendar days. This decision period is determined by law and is included in the European Visa Code (Term Regulation (EC) 810/2009). The legal decision period starts on the day the visa application is received by the embassy. In some cases, more time is needed to conduct research. In that case, the decision period can be extended to a maximum of 30 days. If this is the case, you will be notified by the IND. If additional documents are required, this period may be extended to 60 days in exceptional cases.
A Schengen visa application for the Netherlands can be submitted at the earliest 6 months and at the latest 15 calendar days (due to the normal maximum decision period) before the intended travel date. It is therefore advisable to submit the application well in advance, preferably at least one month before the intended departure date.
A visa for a short stay (up to 90 days) costs € 80 For children aged 6 to 12: € 40 For children up to 6 years of age: € 0 The costs for the VFS service fee Global may amount to a maximum of € 40 (half of the fee for a visa application).
A visa application starts with filling in a visa application form and then collecting the required documents such as proof of travel medical insurance. It is best to use the checklist from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
You must have a valid passport not older than 10 years. You may not pose a threat to public order, national security or international relations of one of the Schengen countries. In addition, there are a number of conditions, which you can read here: about the visa procedure »
